Tuning with Frequency Shaping

What is Frequency Shaping?

  • Frequency Shaping is a method for tuning a control loop in the frequency domain with more flexibility than is available with PID or PIV algorithms. Frequency shaping is a method that uses features in the PID algorithm to get more flexibility than what the standard PID tuning methods can afford.
  • Frequency shaping is a tuning method that can address problematic elements of a system more directly than simpler methods can provide.
  • Frequency shaping is a tuning method that relies heavily on frequency analysis. Unless you have accurate frequency response data for your system, it is useless to use the Frequency Shaping method.
  • After gaining experience, tuning a system with frequency shaping can become more intuitive and precise than tuning with PID in the time domain.
  • Frequency shaping has numerous more adjustments than standard PID tuning methods. It is necessary that the controls engineer has specific knowledge about the problems to be solved in order to apply correct solutions.

What does Frequency Shaping Not do?

  • Frequency shaping is not a different algorithm than the PID algorithm. It is a different method of using the existing PID algorithm.
  • Frequency shaping is not magic. It cannot make an untunable system tunable.
  • Tuning a system with frequency shaping is not a similar process to tuning a system with PID in the time domain.

Are There Similarities between PID tuning and Frequency Shaping?

The Frequency Shaping methods of tuning are very applicable to tuning the standard PID algorithm. Once the controls engineer is comfortable with Frequency Shaping, the same methods will allow greater precision and control over the PID algorithm tuning.
