Selection of the PHY

Although any PHY, meeting the requirements of IEEE 802.3-1998, should function correctly with any FPGA implementation of a SynqNet MAC, there are certain potential sources of incompatibility that must be carefully guarded against. These include:

Poorly characterized portions of the MII timing.
Use of non-standard registers via the SMI.

At this time, only two devices have been tested and recommended for SynqNet: Broadcom's BCM5221 and BCM5222.
